USENET News
A loosely organized network of servers is one of the oldest "electronic bulletin board" or online forum systems on the Internet. Originally implemented over phone lines using UUCP (Unix-to-Unix-Copy) protocols, it mostly uses the TCP-based NNTP (NetNews Transfer Protocol) today. Its function is to disseminate data (articles) injected at arbitrary points in the News network throughout that network. The basic mechanism used is that two logically connected NNTP servers ("newspeers") advertise the articles that they have stored locally ("IHAVE"), and then send (push) those that the peer is actually interested in.
