Federation as a Service in GN4 phase1 continues to develop and offer services to support usage of federated technologies. We are looking to enlarge Federation as a service family, so in addition to FaaS service aimed to support new Federation operators, we started development of a new service - Virtual organisation platform as a service. With VOPaaS we are focusing on providing federated services to Virtual Organisations.
The objectives of the Federation as a Service task are:
- Transition the GN3plus pilot for basic federation functionality to service and continue to support roll-out, where applicable. The transition of FaaS service has been comleted in November 2015. More information about using FaaS can be found at http://wiki.edugain.org/faas.
- Develop a pilot VOPaaS offering as a simple, consistent way of offering and using federated services for virtual organisations, including group management, attribute authorities and roadmap for a facility for projects to operate their own 'homeless IdP' and manage some attributes by themselves. The offer should be designed to leverage existing tools/platforms as much as possible.
- Pilot VOPaaS with partners in the research community to ensure usefulness and proper priorities in developing/enhancing functionalities as well as the ultimate business case.
- Identify the business and commercial considerations involved in making the VOPaaS offer attractive to research communities.
