Service owners of GÉANT T&I services | various | Service owners |
Activity overview
This activity seeks to create a comprehensive, high level and user friendly publicly facing service dashboard for Trust and Identity Services.
Example service dashboards within and beyond the community have a simplified view of whether services “work”:
- Identify high level requirements for the dashboard and discuss with service owners
- Identify services and their endpoints candidates for presentation in the dashboard
- Discuss with service owners how to best represent the metrics
- Identify available free and commercial services for measuring availability
- Select at minimum 2 services for testing.
- Implement a test with these servcies for at least 2 GEANT T&I services.
- Demonstrate the results of this activity on at least 1 relevant event.
Activity Details
This activity does not seek to implement or replace existing monitoring operated by service owners. It recognizes such monitoring is typically fine grained and detailed as is required to report on internal operations and discover potential issues.
The dashboard is also not intended to serve as a replacement for KPI reports by service owners.
Rather than the traditional Nagios like dashboards that show a range of components that contribute to a service, this activity seeks to present a high level, end users friendly overview of the status of various GEANT provided T&I services.
To do so it intents to initially only include metrics from public http(s) based services endpoints. In order to improve the service status report, options are investigated as to how service owners can manually provide additional service status information. It is noted many freely or commercially available services for measuring availability already exist. This activity will investigate using such ready made services over considering operating a service ourselfs.
The work will be done in close collaboration with WP5T3. A dedicated resource from that team will be made available to collaborate with the incubator.
The T&I activities of the GEANT project run a multitude of services ranging for eduroam and eduGAIN to InAcademia, eduTEAMS and various smaller helper services for eduGAIN. We do not have a single overview of the state of all these services. The highly distributed nature limits our ability to present in a consistent way the status of these services and it hinders us in explaining issues when something is wrong. This is relevant both for members of the GEANT community as well as other other stakeholders like service owners and funding angencies
- May not be able to identify relevant services (low)
- May suffer from scope creep (high)
- Service owners may not be capable or willing to cooperate (medium)
- May not be able to identiy available free or commercial products (low)
This activity is done when:
- High level requirements for the dashboard have been identified, discussed and reported
- T&I service candidates for presentation in the dashboard have been identifier, their metrics agreed upon with service owners and reported
- At minimum 2 monitoring services have been identified and tested with least 2 GEANT T&I services.
- Demonstrate the results of this activity on at least 1 relevant event.
